Is microdata important in search engine optimization or is just a crap in html ? Microdata is very important since you can choose which paragraph of your article describes well your article so that google can pick up the description from there if is relevant to the search query.
In short this is the part which goes to the google's Rich Snippet. If you think rich snippet is important the microdata it is as well.
